A Very Good Marble

Saturday I was up by 6:45 since we were gong to Memphis. I walked Oscar to school and back since it wasn't too terribly cold and the sun was out bright and the wind wasn't piercing through my clothes. I put my marble in my bowl early this Saturday.

Paul and I went to Memphis to Grace Thorne's visitation and funeral service at Leawood. Although it was a funeral, it was a lovely service, I got to see Salinda and her family and it was a beautiful day. The family wore red in Grace's honor because that was her favorite color and she was dressed in red. The first song was "Amazing Grace." Very fitting for a fine lady, one whom I regret not knowing better, and who lived a full and productive life. And it was one of the songs at Mama's service, so it was pretty emotional for me. The lay person who did her eulogy did a good job telling about her life, her family, her service to church and her and Allen's love for each other. The burial was in Tishomingo Cemetery south of Iuka and Paul and I didn't go. The family left immediately after the service at Leawood. (Sitting there, I thought about all the family links and how Mama and Grace were at one time in the same family; they were both Thornes. I thought of all I'd missed on that side of the family by not knowing my father. Or him not knowing me. Looking back I can see that I probably could have done more to know the aunts, uncles and cousins, but I suppose it has worked out like it was supposed to. I have other cousins whom I've gotten to know over the years. I guess even "close" families have cousins they don't know that well...)

Paul and I went to Wolf Chase and ate lunch at the Red Lobster there. I think it's the first time in at least two years we've been there, and probably longer. After the pretty salad, cheese sticks, cheese biscuits, shrimp scampi and fried shrimp, and baked potato (me), and Paul's crab alfredo, we went to the theater to check on movie times. We were going to see "The Bucket List" and had about an hour before the next showing. I needed some socks, so we went to Dillard's. I looked, with the help of a tiny little woman about 80 years old (bless her for being able to work!), and finally just ended up browsing the racks going for the practical black/brown/khaki. A former Wynne teacher happened by and we got to talking and naturally missed our show time. But that was okay. (Sher had seen it and said it was a good movie but maybe it'll be on in Wynne.) Since we weren't trying to get to the movie then, I decided to look at some other things and bought a new red purse and a billfold. After "moving" into them yesterday, I decided the billfold wouldn't work and I'll return it. I like the red purse though. It's the first one I've bought since the black one with all the compartments and Teri was with me that day. (She said it was too big and I didn't need to carry that on my then-hurting left shoulder. She was probably right. But I did carry it for about 5 years.) I did get some "pretty" socks, too, with patterns.

On the way home, we stopped by to see Amy at work and Paul took her the 1938 Cadillac model hearse (18" long!), with removable casket and church truck. Those two! With her vocation and his hobby, she will have to have another room just for model hearses! He had also bought a smaller version of the same hearse, about 8" long (and it also had a tiny casket, but this one wasn't lined...) She was genuinely touched that he'd gotten them for her.

After we got home, we snacked since we'd had such a big lunch and I did my right shoulder exercises, adding some that are in the book, that I hadn't done before, really stretching that arm out. Oscar was glad to see us and we had another short walk before bedtime.

A Very Good Marble.
