Things To Do At Lunch
An hour isn't very long to do a whole lot, but that's what I have for a lunch break. Occasionally it seems too long and I wish for a half hour and then to go home at 4:30.
After I eat usually a half a sandwich, a small container of applesauce and sometimes a few chips or Cheetos, I have to get out for a few minutes. My options are:
The Christian bookstore - I buy "thinking of you" cards, sometimes a new Christian book, a CD, or just look around.
Fred's - easy to get in and get out if I know they will have exactly what I want. Sometimes I go there and end up going to Wal-Mart for the item Fred's doesn't stock.
Dollar Tree - Everything's One Dollar! How fun is that! It's like being a kid again with a few coins or in the case of a working person, a few dollars, to have an "Artist's Date" like Julia Cameron describes in her "Artist's Way" book - buy a fat highlighter, a package of gel pens, some greeting cards, socks for Paul, composition books (like I needed them!), Travelin' Buddy gifts. Sometimes I even find things I need, like sandwich bags, gift bags, shower caps. (Today there was a long phone cord for yes One Dollar, that I paid $5.64 for at Wal-Mart yesterday. Shoulda waited.) I can get a double handful of stuff for about $10 or $15 dollars. Graham crackers, Pringles, packets of flower seeds. All those necessary things.
Wal-Mart - For the more serious shopping - the essential cleaning supplies, cat food, things to fix for supper, more pens and notebooks. It's a good workout, too, (for me) from parking lot to store and all through the aisles, back to the truck. On the days I wear my pedometer, I get the most steps when I go to W-M.
Post Office - To mail something or pick up stamps that could almost as easily be done from work. The other day I went to a small P. O. between here and home and avoided all the downtown traffic.
To Buy Lunch - I don't do this as much any more because most times what I eat out makes me feel too full and I have to take antacid besides what I take in the morning. (O, the joys of stomach problems!)
Read or do crossword puzzles.
These types of things I've been doing for 35+ years, having commuted about 30 minutes away from home. That's why I bring a bag of stuff including books for the times I don't go out.
The spring-like days we are having this week are conducive to getting 0ut. Those rare days between winter cold to summer heat/humidity, before the pollen starts flying around, I try to leave the office for a little while. I know the days of confinement will soon be here. But I'll have my faithful companion books.
Today it's off to buy a birthday card. Fred's or Dollar General? I haven't been to either of those in a while.
What an exciting life.
