I read the entire poem and it is more hopeful than "bleak." I did not know this more well-known verse is in this poem and have just connected the entire song with the poem's meaning - the birth of Christ:
What can I give him,
Poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd
I would bring a lamb,
If I were a wise man
I would do my part,
Yet what I can I give Him —
Give my heart.
Poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd
I would bring a lamb,
If I were a wise man
I would do my part,
Yet what I can I give Him —
Give my heart.

Listening to Delilah's night time show with Christmas song requests. I haven't listened to the radio at night in some time. But I addressed and signed some Christmas cards this evening and decided to turn on the radio.
